Postmills were once the prevalent form of windmill in Britain — the whole building sits on a post, about which it pivots; the mill is turned to face into the wind by means of an attached pole. Wrawby sits on an elevated site on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. It is an excellent position for a windmill, and the current structure replaced an earlier mill here. Martha Hodes tells a series of stories about such liaisons in the years before the Civil War, explores the complex ways in which white Southerners tolerated them in the slave South, and shows how and why these responses changed with emancipation. Hodes provides details of the wedding of a white servant-woman and a slave man in , an antebellum rape accusation that uncovered a relationship between an unmarried white woman and a slave, and a divorce plea from a white farmer based on an adulterous affair between his wife and a neighborhood slave.

Drawing on sources that include courtroom testimony, legislative petitions, pardon pleas, and congressional testimony, she presents the voices of the authorities, eyewitnesses, and the transgressors themselves–and these voices seem to say that in the slave South, whites were not overwhelmingly concerned about such liaisons, beyond the racial and legal status of the children that were produced.

Only with the advent of black freedom did the issue move beyond neighborhood dramas and into the arena of politics, becoming a much more serious taboo than it had ever been before. Hodes gives vivid examples of the violence that followed the upheaval of war, when black men and white women were targeted by the Ku Klux Klan and unprecedented white rage and terrorism against such liaisons began to erupt.

An era of terror and lynchings was inaugurated, and the legacy of these sexual politics lingered well into the twentieth century. White women, black men:

Concentrating on professional studio portraits, it is designed to aid the amateur family historian in assessing photographic material from a time when the technology was developing at a phenomenal rate: For the newcomer whose interest is genealogy rather than photography per se it can all be rather confusing. The book is a revised version of Dating Old Photographs , which has been split into two, the second volume covering the early part of the twentieth century.

Improvements came thick and fast, and Pols touches on these and social aspects as photography became widespread and the costs fell. He notes that many studio photographers were unadventurous and tended to follow convention, a reluctance to innovate which can assist the historian to date the photographs they produced. Also, while there were numerous processes, those likely to encountered fall into relatively few types.

Mar 10,  · All photographs from the 19th century are strange but some go way beyond that. When photography arrived on the scene in the s, scientists realized it could reveal secrets from the invisible worlds of microscopic bacteria and distant galaxies.

Paul Getty Museum announced the acquisition of 39 early French and British architecture and landscape photographs dating between the s through the s, some of the most impressive prints and negatives of their time. The works were previously owned by Santa Monica resident Jay McDonald, who has collected photography since the s and currently holds of one of the best private collections of the 19th-century photography in the country.

Notre-Dame, Paris, circa The sixteen paper negatives in the group comprise a particularly important component of the acquisition, as they triple our holdings of paper negatives by French makers and add four excellent negatives by British makers. It represents one of the rare moments when science and art come together to produce something totally unexpected — indeed a totally new art form.

This acquisition also reinforces our commitment to collecting photography that spans the full history of the art form and places the Getty among the most significant repositories of early paper negatives in an American collection, rivaled only by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the George Eastman House.

Daguerreotypes The daguerreotype was created by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre and is known by photography experts as the first practical form of photography. Daguerreotypes were produced on a thin copper metal support that had a polished coating of silver that was mirror-like. In America, daguerreotypes were often placed in hinged, wooden cases with paper or leather coverings.

Also look for their highly-polished silver support. Salt printing was also the first process to utilize both a negative and a positive allowing photographers to create prints of larger quantities. Photographers would coat a thin sheet of paper with egg white which would hold light-sensitive silver salt on the surface of the paper, preventing image fading.

The first pages of the volume are taken up with what appears to be an herbal, each page containing a large if somewhat sloppily executed drawing of a plant, depicting root, stem, flowers, and leaves, around which extensive text, in no recognizable language but written in a fluent cursive hand, has been carefully arranged so as to avoid encroaching on any part of the picture. These consist of multiple small drawings embedded in the text of each page, alongside objects in the margin that resemble pharmacological jars, perhaps suggesting that this part of the manuscript refers back to the opening herbal, and was intended as a collection of medical recipes.

Born in and a graduate in law and chemistry from the University of Moscow, Voynich had been arrested in as a revolutionary Polish nationalist and had spent five years in exile in Siberia. Escaping via Mongolia on a forged passport, Voynich had ultimately arrived penniless in England, having bartered even his spectacles and waistcoat to pay for his passage. A flamboyant personality regarded with hostility or condescension by less successful dealers and more orthodox bibliophiles, Voynich packed his catalogs with arcane bibliographical detail, which established his reputation for near omniscience: Specializing at first in incunabula—books printed before —he sold to prestigious collectors and libraries, including the British Museum, which bought the entire contents of his eighth catalog.

More than three hundred of these hidden Jesuit treasures ultimately ended up in the Vatican Library, but in Voynich, who regularly toured Italy in search of incunabula and manuscripts, managed to buy a few. If Voynich labeled his acquisition an ugly duckling, he was nevertheless convinced that he had acquired an exceptional swan in the making, for he believed its baffling text concealed a scientific treatise of major importance by one of the greatest minds of the high Middle Ages.

Zevi 1 , fig. The special status that Ostia now had can be deduced from the use of marble, that was still exceptional. Marble was also used for the decoration of the tomb of Agrippa’s collaborator Poplicola. It is not clear when the Forum, the central square, was laid out, but during the reign of Augustus, at the end of the first century BC, two temples were built at its north side, possibly a Capitolium and a Temple of Jupiter.

An aqueduct was built. Claudius AD sent urban cohorts to Ostia to fight fires.
